In accordance with the government document issued in September 2014, the People's Government of Yunnan Province authorized the formation of Yunnan Provincial Academy of Science and Technology (YAST) with integrating former 5 institutions (Yunnan Academy of Applied Technology Research, Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Exchange Service Center, Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Achievement Transferring Service Center, Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Management and Training Center, the Southwest China New Product and Technology Exhibition Center) which were directly subordinated to Science and Technology Department of Yunnan Province. Since March 2015, YAST is officially turning the cover page and step into a brand new development track. The formation of YAST is a strategic approach of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee of the CPC and the People's Government of Yunnan Province to further implement the innovation-driven development strategy, and to strengthen technology innovation system of the industries.

Focusing on industrial technology collaborative innovation and industrial technology R&D, technology services, S&T achievements transferring, with deepening reforms and institutional innovation, YAST aims to become the core-and-hub for industrial technology collaborative innovation, become the major supporter for the Yunnan’s Top 8 industries development and traditional industry upgrading. It aims to be the convergence of domestic and foreign outstanding talents in science and technology, and the big platform for S&T achievements transferring and become the booster for South Asia and Southeast Asia Industrial Technology Collaborative Innovation.
